Are We Really That Violent?

by Lucy C.

I bet most people don’t know that more than ninety percent of guns in households are used for murderous attempts, murders, suicidal attempts, or suicides.  I bet most people don’t know that New Orleans has ten times the deaths per one hundred thousand people than the United States average.  I bet most people don’t know at all about most of the damage guns have caused.  Peter Menge, a resident of New Orleans, tells me these facts.  Menge also says that America is number one in gun ownership: “…88.8 guns per 100 people. Compare this to Germany which ranks #15 at 30.3 guns per 100 people and you begin to see just how many guns there are in the USA.”

I know everyone here just thinks of guns as part of American society.  But have you ever thought of a society without guns?   I mean really think about it, hard.  Would life be that different?  I don’t really think so except for maybe the fact that on the news there would be about half the crimes done with guns than there are now.  Now think about it some more- doesn’t it sound so good?  Maybe that would be real life if guns get banned.  Sure, you wouldn’t be able to go hunting.  So what?  You can still have meat from local humane farms that are certified by the government.  And besides, you can still go fishing.  They’re not going to ban fishing poles!

It is absolutely fine if you don’t believe in banning guns.  That is your opinion.  You think that guns are part of your childhood, your life, everything!  Don’t worry that they might get banned because that probably won’t happen tomorrow.  Just maybe you shouldn’t keep them in your house because they could cause a lot of damage.  It would be fine if you kept them in a place where you couldn’t easily reach them, out of your house.

So think about it, if you are out there reading this.  Maybe it sounds horribly wrong to you.  Maybe it sounds like a better tomorrow.  I don’t know.  Just think about it, will you?  Because it actually could be better in, say, twenty years.
